Chapter Six
The three friends continued following the ogre through the woods. Daniel saw something up ahead of them. He recognised it as a thread of wool from Pippa’s cardigan, hanging from a bush. It looked like she had caught on it as she walked past. “Look, Ogressbo, this is my sister’s.”
“Then we’re on the right track.” All of them quickened their pace again. It was reassuring to have proof that Pippa was here in this place. On they walked.
The woods were now starting to get gloomy. It was early dusk. The trees seemed to grow towards each other, the spaces between them getting smaller as the light slipped away. Ogressbo quickened his pace. “If we’re going to catch them,” he said, “we must keep moving. They’re likely to stop and take shelter soon, and then we’ll be catching up. I’ll be having a strong word. I’m very sorry about this.”
“You’re not very much like an ogre it seems,” said Daniel.
“There are good and bad ogres, just like everyone else. I do what I can. But tell me, didn’t you come from the other place? You sort of dropped out of the sky.”
Daniel nodded. “We don’t know how that worked. We were inside a house and when we jumped down a giant tube we ended up here.”
“It’s been a while since anyone arrived that way,” he replied. “I think this may not be a good sign. My brother doesn’t usually disappear either.”
Suddenly, they heard shouting. There were people in the distance. Daniel saw movement. These were tall enough to be human. The strangest thing about the forest was that they had seen so many different creatures, but no humans. Everything here had seemed to be trolls, ogres and fairies. Well that was about to change, but for a few seconds Daniel watched nervously on case it was their parents come to bring them home. As they got closer, he was reassured. It was two men walking with a donkey, leading it through the woods. “What a relief! It’s nobody we know,” he said.
“Just be careful,” said Ogressbo. “Not everyone in these woods will be nice to you. Humans can be the worst if you’re not concentrating.”
“That’s harsh,” said Max.
“It’s true,” said Ogressbo. “They’ll try to get you on their side, make you think they’re pleasant, and then trick you. Trolls are much more honest about wanting to eat you.”
It wasn’t how Daniel would have thought about it, but he saw what Ogressbo meant. The message was to be careful anyway, not to ignore them. “Hello,” said Daniel.
“Hello little boys,” said the men. For a moment Daniel thought they were just going to walk past without saying anything else. But they stopped their donkey. “Are you with this ogre of your own free will?” one of them asked.
Daniel thought for a minute, looked at Max and then back at the men. “What do you mean?” he asked.
“He hasn’t kidnapped you?” he replied. “Ogres are known for kidnap, and some of them eat children.
